The Mighty God and Goddess of Buddhist Pantheon wish to reveal themselves before the world once again through the pages of the Buddhist Iconography. Their will is supreme. After overcoming difficulties, delays and obstacles, the Buddhist Iconography at last is presented to the scholarly world in present edition after laps of full five years. believe in my heart of hearts that my grandparent's invisible care and blessings are in a large measure responsible for this happy ending. It gives me immense satisfaction. This book is an embodiment of my Ph.D thesis submitted to the Faculty of Buddhist Studies.
The study of the Buddhist branch of Indian Iconography is one of the most interesting and fascinating of all studies.
In Buddhist Iconography the whole world is interested because Buddhism is not confined within the limits of India like Hinduism and Jainism, but travelled far and wide beyond the Himalayas to Tibet, China, Japan, Korea, and Mongolia on one side.
The present work contains an analytical study of Buddhist Iconography in Bihar. The voluminous works of Abhyakaragupta, B. Bhattacharya, J.N. Banerjee, Fouscher. M Aser, T.A.G. Rao, P.C. Bagchi, Alice Getty, S.W. Bushell, M.A. Stain, D.N. Bakshi, B.N. Mishra, Chitta Ranjan Prasad Sinha, Jayadeva Mishra and different other scholars have done much with regard to different Brahmanical and Buddhist sculptural art. But an analysis of Buddhist art and their silent features as a whole has not is done by scholars with regard to Buddhist art in Bihar. Thus in my dissertation I tried my best to present the result of my study in a systematic way using the work of a prominent scholars, archaeological evidences at museums and by site visit. I have firm believe that this volume will help us to identify the future course of research in the area of Buddhist Iconography which is, at present a very prominent area of challenging investigation where I have tried to contribute a small.
