This is the report on the work done as a Senior Fellow of the Dravidian Linguistic Association, Trivandrum during 1984-1985.
The subject of my investigation is a comparison of the studies on Malayalam Grammar by A.R. Rajaraja Varma, the author of the Keralapaniniyam and Bishop Caldwell, the author of A Comparative Grammar of the Dravidian or South Indian Family of Languages. In my work, I have surveyed the ground covered by the famous Pithika or preface to Prof. Rajaraja Varma's work and also examined comparatively what Caldwell has said on the same areas. I have further examined in detail how A.R. Rajaraja Varma expounds on the Malayalam verb. Further, Caldwell's observations on Malayalam verbs lying scattered in several sections of his work have been made into a connected statement as found necessary. I have also examined some other problems. Some areas like adjectives could not be covered, for want of time. What has been done has been indicated in this report, divided into four main sections.
Where I have introduced a new point of view, or added to what the two grammarians have said, I have indicated it by such expressions as "It may be added", "Mention may be made" etc.
While presenting this report, I express my thanks to the Dravidian Linguistics Association (DLA) and its Director - Prof. V.I. Subramoniam for offering me this fellowship.
