The course on guidance and counselling, of which course-iv is a part, is an omnibus course meant to prepare counsellors to develop and use a repository of knowledge and skills for enhancing the Career Development of student in schools.
Career is not just related to the economic aspect alone, it also includes an understanding of the psychological and social dynamics of human behavior. In this holistic perspective, understanding and facilitating career development as one dimension of human behaviour is an important task of a counsellor.
The three units of this module aim at providing you sufficient grounding on concepts which explain career behaviour,
principles of career behaviour and development,
various approaches to understanding career behaviour,
different kinds of psychological and sociological leanings which various career psychologists show while formulating their models and theories,
the manner in which these theories facilitate the counsellors handing of client's career counselling needs.
Unit (1), the introductory topic attempts to enlighten the counsellor trainee on the basic concepts of work and career which occupy a central position in the youth's future careers and life style and which form the core of this course on understanding career development. In unit (ii) and (iii) an attempt has been made to describe and evaluate the most commonly used career development theories. It may be noted that the description of the theories are not full-blown but rather fragments have been highlighted to integrate and systematise the career decision making process related to adolescents.
Finally this module has been written with an eye toward the needs of a practicing counsellor. It is felt that this module will provide a sufficient theoretical basis relevant to the conduct of career counselling and will be of use to the counsellor.
