Book Description
Preface
The volume in hand is the sixth in series of the Catalogue of Sanskrit and Prakrit manuscripts containing description of some 1160 manuscripts (Accn. No. 23647-25146) preserved at the Headquarters.

These catalogues serve twofold purpose, namely: to provide material for the new Catalogues Catalogorum of Sanskrit and Prakrit manuscripts and also to make available to scholars detailed information about the manuscripts preserved here. We have, however, added to their utility by giving extracts from some important manuscripts.

Some of the works classified here may be noticed briefly as they seem to retain their value either as commentaries or commentaries on commentaries, and add to our stock of knowledge on the subjects they deal with. Mostly these few were written in the 18th century, although a broader classification of time places them between the 17th and 19th centuries, they are merely copies of the still older texts, based chiefly on the "Dharmasastras" and other authoritative works.

The "Visnaismrti-tika" (28/24826) by Nanda Pandita originally from South speaks of the importance of Kasi as the seat of learning where scholars assembled from all parts of the country. The author has given a valuable historical account of the religious deeds of the rulers of the Vijayanagar Empire. The "Sadacara-vatsa" is a part of bigger work the "Ahalya Kamadhenu" (30/25025) compiled for the deeply religious queen Ahalya BM who very capably ruled the Holkar State till her death in 1795 A.D. The "Gaya Sraddha Paddhati" (43/25079) is a useful reference work on the rites performed for the dead. The "Suddhi Prakasa- (49/24841) by Jvala. Natha Misra a Bali Saraswat Brahmin from Punjab is an excellent treatise on the Dharmasastras. This work is among the few we have on the aspect of during the period of uncleanliness caused by menses. The "Sundara Kanda (97/24582) is particularly useful for a textual study of the Valmiki Ramayana as it includes some additional verses which may be picked up with profit for a comparison with the Baroda text. Among the several commentaries of the Raghuvamsa of Kalidasa.
