Since the day of its inception Orissa Sahitya Akademi has been trying to promote Oriya literature through its various activities. Translation is one such: from other Indian languages into Oriya and vice-versa. With this goal the Akademi has taken up the translation of Satchidananda Raut-Roy's stories into English, Gopinath Mohanty's novel, Managahirara Chasa into. Hindi, etc.
Satchidananda Raut-Roy is the father-figure of modern Oriya poetry. He is also a distinguished short story writer. But outside Orissa he is hardly known as a short story writer. His stories, though few, are remarkable for their human appeal. We feel privileged to publish a selection of his stories, The Cemetery Flower. I am indebted to its translator, Rabindra K Swain. I am also grateful to Professor. J. N. Patnaik, who has gone through this translation and offered his valuable comments.
