In order to make all the levels of the universe work in harmony, Lord Shiva linked all the levels by merging the nine forms of Goddess Durga to achieve the universal Shakti or Energy, thus creating all nine dimensions. This complete form is called Nav Durga.
Chandraghanta is one of the nine forms of the Goddess. Chandra means moon and ghanta means bell. Ghanta is also a symbol of sound and is used as a weapon by the Goddess in overcoming demons. As Chandraghanta, the Goddess is depicted as having golden skin and with a moon-crescent near her forehead. She is shown as having three eyes and ten hands, eight of which carry weapons and two of which form gestures of giving boons and stopping harms. She is shown as sitting on a tiger. She is usually associated with the giver of knowledge, bliss and serenity.
The nine Goddesses, who actually are forms of Goddess Durga, are propitiated on each day of a popular Hindu festival called the Navaratri. The form of Nav Durga which is worshipped on the third day of the festival is called Chandraghanta.
