Book Description
About the Book
Jagadis Chandra Bose was per excellence the path-finder of independent pursuit of Science and Technology which could put India on the map of modern societies, even in the teeth of colonial oppression. The present work is the first attempt to make an intensive probe into the intellectual make up of an Indian Scientist de-voted to blending his scientific pursuits with an anti colonial consciousness. The author has also tried to examine the dialectics between a colonial set up posing a wide array of constraints against intellectual regeneration of the colonial people and an exceptionally gifted indigenous scientist struggling all the way through to bring science to the service of a nationalist cause. The concept of nationalism thus assumes a new dimension in the present analysis.

Acknowledgements
I started to work on this subject while I was still in the University, puruing my Master of Philosophy degree. It is needless to say that neither the final dissertation nor this current version of the book would have been impossible without the guidance of my supervisor Dr Tilottama Mukherjee. She must have spent several sleepless nights to get it done. I owe Dr. Ananda Bhattacharyya for helping me select this particular topic and providing me with critical insights. This version of the book would have been incomplete without the insights and encouragement provided by Professor Sekhar Bandhyapadhyay. I am also grateful to Professor Chittabrata Palit who was not only kind enough to provide my book with a foreward but also helped me in my understanding of the topic. Special thanks should also go to Bidisha Chakravorty of West Bengal State Archives for her patience and the non archival stuff for patiently rendering service to all the scholars. This work would not have been possible without my Grandmother Ilina Sengupta who helped me type the first draft, my mother Swati who always stayed awake till I finished and my friends and collegues Asif, Debasmita, Madhuparna, Vavna, Rachayitree, Poulami, Moushali, Hemen, Arka, Swatilekha and Ajit who kept me honest and competitive. I am grateful to my aunt Dr Bharati Sen for helping me with the geographical and environmental aspect of my arguments.

Introduction
Till the turn of the present century the British imperial government in India had no distinct science policy; or, perhaps it never wanted that scientific education should flourish in a colony which ought not to have more than the status of a perennial supplier of labour and raw materials. Although, a few scientific institutions such as Calcutta, Bombay, Madras Medical Colleges and the Presidency College of Calcutta were established by the government at that time, they were exclusively manned by and meant for the Europeans. On the other hand, the nature of scientific research, carried out in the country in those days was actually an extension of European science. The Trigonometric Survey, Agricultural and Botanical Survey, the Mining Federation, the Geographical survey, Planter's Association, Chambers of Commerce and similar organizations were very active in the field of science. But the fruits of their work did not percolate to the soil where they worked. In fact, the production and growth of modern science in India was encouraged by the British with a view to furthering colonial interests. Thus, the British sponsored science, by the very reason of its existence, was field science. Geography, geology, botany and zoology, archaeology, medicine and even astronomy-all these stemmed from the physical and cultural novelty of India. This science was colonial in the sense that its agenda was decided on the grounds of political and commercial gains.
