Book Description
About the Book
In this book an attempt has been made to establish a world philosophy by synthesising the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Immanuel Kant. A close study of their ethical ideals prove that there is a hidden network which welds and revitalises human resources. Though both belonged to different continents and different ages, their message is identical which must be realised by the warring world. Man is a social animal. He must live in society, for which, he must adhere to the ethical ideals which alone can make the world a fit place to live in. The best solution would be to trod on the ethical path pro-pounded by Gandhi and Kant.

Preface
This book is an attempt to present a critical and comparative study focusing on the life and ethical thought of Mahatma Gandhi and Immanuel Kant. It is my considered opinion that the ethical thought of Gandhi and Kant is for humanity in general. I am full of admiration for both the thinkers. Yet I have also tried critically to bring out their shortcomings, which is inevitable. In fact, no great man has a blameless record. At the same time, we must respect these great souls. My approach is analytical. Hence it is not entirely antagonistic; it also includes appreciation. I have painstakingly gone through the voluminous materia relating to the writings of both the thinkers. I have made efforts to establish the possibility of a world philosophy by synthesising the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Immanuel Kant. I have divided the book into three parts. The first part is concerned with the life, ethical thought and relevancy of Mahatma Gandhi to the present conditions of life. The second one is concerned with the life and ethical thought of Immanuel Kant and lastly, the third part, comprises of a comparative study and conclusion. Gandhi and Kant tried in their own ways to develop the texture in the quality of mind and succeeded to a great extent in the beautification of minds. By evaluating their life history one can discern all the facts that accumulated to produce these great personalities. Though both of them lived at different periods and places yet there is similarity in their ethical approach. Obviously the background of these two thinkers are different; their ages are different, yet the main problems of their ethics is to a great extent identical. If East and West are to be united their messages must be understood by all men of good will today. I feel intense pleasure in expressing my thanks to Dr. R. S. Srivastava, Ex-Head of the Department of Philosophy, Ranchi University. It is only due to his encouragement that the result of my effort is fruitful. I am especially grateful to Dr. K. K. L. Karna, University Professor of Philosophy, Ranchi University, Ranchi, for the help which he rendered. My sincere thanks to Dr. M. Muthuraman, Retd. Principal of Pachaiyappa's College, Kanchipuram, who helped me a lot with his able guidance. My gratefulness to these masters is more than I can express in words.
