Tibet House, New Delhi, set up in 1965 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, has been undertaking a number of activities to spread the knowledge of Tibetan and Buddhist culture in India and Abroad.
The annual Padmapani lecture is one of the on going activities of the Indo-Tibetan Art and Culture Study Group of Tibet House. The thirteen lectures organised in the past covered a variety of topics related to Buddhist culture and philosophy, art and architecture, history and archaeology.
The fourteenth Padmapani lecture on September 26, 2002, was delivered by Professor Stanislav Menshikov on "Compassionate Economy Has a Future" in keeping with the interest expressed by His Holiness to extend the concept of Buddhism particularly compassion into the field of economics. The term 'Compassionate Economy' was, in fact, coined by His Holiness, revealing first time on September 10, 1990 in Amsterdam, addressing a meeting of artists, scientists, spiritual leaders and economists. It is then that His Holiness asked Prof. Stanislav Menshikov if he could design and work on a model on a Compassionate Economy, which he kindly agreed. Tibet House, therefore, has made allout effort to utilise the keen effort made by Prof. Menshikov in the form of annual Padmapani lecture.
The whole day Seminar which followed the above lecture, on September 27, aimed to discuss extensively its likely structure of the Compassionate Economy and the issues arising in this age of globalisation, making some people happy which many others unhappy. The participants in the Seminar included renowned economic and social thinkers and were moderated by Sri L.C. Jain, former Member, Planning Commission. Dr. (Mrs.) Larissa Klimneko Menshikova, Sri Jairam Ramesh, Sri Ravindra Varma, Prof. Krishna Nath, Prof. B.B. Bhattacharya, Prof. Naushad Ali Azad, and Sri N. Chandra Mohan, besides Prof. Menshikov, gave their frank views on the concept and structure.
Ms. Louwrien Wijers, who was a participant of the event, has very ably compiled the lecture and the views of the participants as also discussions that followed.
The whole material was voluntarily edited by Dr. Kalyan Raipuria, former Senior Economic Adviser in Government of India, and is being published in the form of a monograph for the benefit of future discussion.
We would like to thank all the speakers and particularly to Ms. Wijers and Dr. Raipuria for making this publication possible.
It is hoped that the monograph would help in enhancing awareness and the role of human values notably compassion in economics. It goes without saying that such discussions need to take often, as suggested by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in order to help reach certain practical steps in this direction.
