Introduction
After the attainment of Buddhahood at Bodhgayä, Säkyamuni Buddha turned the Wheels of Dharma solely for the welfare of sentient beings. Upon practicing his dharma, many beings attained the higher rebirth and definite goodness. In this way, they could attain their goal of life. The attainment Buddha cultivated the bodhimind and strived for the attainment of this state of the state of Omniscience is the ultimate goal of Buddhism. Šäkyamuni through many ascetic practices. During the life-time of the Compassionate Teacher, his doctrine spread to a small number of countries only, such as India, Sri Lanka and so on. It is because in those days, other countries where Buddhism flourished later were not even in existence. But during the last two decades, his doctrine spread out far and wide throughout the world. The entire teachings of Šäkyamuni Buddha are collected in the TripiŃaka (Three Baskets of Teachings) and the four classes of Tantra. In terms of field of study, these are divided into five branches of sciences, which are again divided into eighteen. The collection of Buddha's teachings translated from Sanskrit into Tibetan is called Kagyur in Tibetan. A large number of commentarial and sub-commentarial works written on Kagyur are available in Tibetan language today are known as Tengyur and Sungbum. Among them, the collection of volumes of scriptures written by the prophesized Indian Buddhist masters, such as Nāgārjuna, Asańga, Aryadeva, Vasubandhu and many others is called Tengyur (Tib. bstan 'gyur) in Tibetan Language whereas the collection of texts written by the Tibetan scholars is called Sungbum. Undoubtedly, a huge number of terms and terminologies are used in those original treatises and their commentaries, which are hardly available in other languages except Tibetan. Thus, one who does not know Tibetan faces problems in understanding those treatises without having proper knowledge of the meanings of those words. For the practicing Buddhists it is far more important to grasp the full meaning of the terms. Keeping in mind all such necessities, a few years back I decided to compile a Dictionary (Tibetan-Hindi-English) containing more than 65,000 primary and useful entries available only in Tibetan sources and expressions. The fruit of that decision is the present Dictionary containing the terms related to Buddhist History, Literature, Religion and Philosophy. By the grace of my Guru and Triple Jewel as well as good wishes from spiritual friends scattered all over the world and as a result of my enthusiastic efforts, hard work and perseverance during the last 7-8 years, I became finally successful in winding up the work.
