Book Description
About the Book
The main purpose of presenting this book to English readers is to clear the prevailing misunderstandings about the development of Hindi as the national language and the official language of the nation. The author has taken pains to clear the wrong perception in the public mind that Hindi is the language of the Hindus and Urdu that of the Muslims generally. He is of the view that the Muslim contribution for the cause of Hindi, perhaps, is far ahead of that of others. He has presented elaborate details to prove that Hindi is a secular language and an All India language too, to qualify itself as the national language of our country. He claims that the Hindi /Hindustani movement pioneered by Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, was a powerful tool to achieve national unity and communal harmony, resulting in the freedom of the country. The various factors which stand in the way of the development and the progressive use of Hindi have also been discussed in detail in this book. The present book in English is a renewed and updated version of his book in Hindi titled, 'Hindi Ki Sanskriti, published earlier. The author believes that this book will be well received by all those who are interested in dispelling the misunderstandings about Hindi and thereby help them to promote the cause of Hindi.

Preface
The main purpose of presenting this book in English to non-Hindi readers is to clear the prevailing misunderstandings about the development of Hindi as national language and official language of the nation. There is a wrong perception in the public mind that Hindi is the language of the Hindus and Urdu that of Muslims generally. The reality is that Hindi is not the sole property of Hindus and Urdu not the sole property of Muslims. It is unfortunate to note that difference between Hindi and Urdu is felt more after Independence than ever before. After formation of Pakistan, much change has occurred in the form and style of Hindi. It is to be understood that divisiveness between Hindi and Urdu on the basis of communal consideration is harmful to the community life of Indians, as a whole. In view of the above it is not a healthy trend to think of Hindi and Urdu as synonymous for Hindus and Muslims respectively. It may not be correct to presume that all Muslims in India being followers of Islam are Urdu-speaking people. Further, everybody knows that Urdu is not the language of all Muslims in India. As a communal colour has been added to Hindi as the language of the Hindus, innocent Muslims are compelled to consider Hindi as the language of the Hindus. But the reality is that Hindi is as much the language of Muslims as that of the Hindus. It may be surprising to many that the very name of 'Hindi' was given to it by the Muslim poet Amir Khusrau in the 13th century. Amir Khusrau was the first visionary to foresee Hindi as the national language of this country. Since then, so many Muslim writers have contributed immensely for the enrichment of this language and its literature. It should be accepted that the Muslim contribution for the cause of Hindi is perhaps far ahead of that of others. It is quite unfortunate that this reality is not taken note of by the majority of Muslims: There is a basic unity in these two languages. That is why the father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi adopted Hindi as the unifying force during the freedom struggle.
