Ustad Zahiruddin & Faiyazuddin Dagar were born in 1933 and 1934 respectively and are the younger sons of Ustad Nasiruddin Khan Dagar (who passed away soon after their birth in 1936). They underwent their musical training under their elder brothers, the late Ustad N. Mohiuddin & Ustad N. Aminuddin Dagar. They also benefitted from the presence of their uncles Ustad Riyazuddin Khan Dagar, Ustad Rahimuddin Khan Dagar and Ustad Hussainuddin Khan Dagar.
Through their harmonious singing together, they have helped perpetuate the tradition of 'Jugal band hi' in Dhrupad singing. This has been a unique feature of the Dagar family for generations. Their rendering of Dagarbani Dhrupad is characterized by the meditative and leisurely development of the alap, stressing its devotional nature. As for their rendering of Dhrupad and Dhamar, its most obvious feature is their attempt to preserve an emotional appeal even during the layakari and to weave intricate rhythmic patterns with all spontaneity and fervour.
The Dagar Brothers have dedicated themselves to the preservation of the Dhrupad form which can be traced back to nineteen unbroken generations in their family. They have been imparting training in Dhrupad to interested students and have inspired the formation of Dhrupad Societies in Jaipur, Delhi and even Paris, all contributing to the renaissance of this ancient art-form.
Raga Miyan ki Malhar The chief representative of the Malhar ragas, this raga is stated to be the creation of the legendary 16th century Musician Tansen. This raga has a very strong and seasonal association with the monsoon & it is stated that a well-sung raga should be able to bring forth the rains. The general time of performances of the raga is any time during the monsoons or otherwise around midnight.
