Serenity of tone is the hallmark of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan’s sarod. ‘Darbari’. Is one of those ragas which are ideally suited for this instrument which has a deep sound. The note komal gandhar constitutes the soul of the raga. It is literally a feast for one’s ears. Amjad Ali Khan caresses and fondles ‘komal gandhar’ and coaxes the most touching pasterns from the sarod. The consonance between ‘pancam’ and ‘rishabh’ is also equally moving. Ustad Zakir Hussain has an amazing ability to adapt his tabla to the mood of the sarod. His approach is gentle in the beginning and he unleashes his famous fireworks only when they have a relevance.

On this CD the two Ustands pool their phenomenal talents to produce excellent Music. This pool is provided through the soothing strains of the raga “Darabari’ played on the sarod. This raga with its andolans (trills) gives comfort to the agitating soul. Some ragas are not meant for excessive taanbazi (display of taan spinning capacity of the performer). Darbari is one such raga. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan dopts a gentle approach and unravels the mystery of the raga through his fascinating alaaps. This music which is as soft as it is sophisticated brings succour to the tormented soul.
