This field of geographic-cum-Indological investigation remained totally unearthed and unexplored. Its veiled mystery and novelty scintillated with great fascination for me; besides, its unravelling was long-awaited and had be-come a crying need of the day, specially when geography came to occupy its rightful place in India in the modern era. This incentive and inspiration propelled me to undertake this work. It covers the period from the Vedic times to 1200 A.D.

In the investigation all the material which could be available has been fully utilised and profoundly chaffed. It is just possible that new discoveries of archmology, other sources of Indology and manuscripts may throw further light on the subject, still in the present dissertation attempt has been made to be as much complete, as much up to date and authentic as is possible. (The manuscript was finished by March, 1960 and was published in to immediately after that in various reputed research journals. However, by the time of its going to press in 1969 in the present form, a few additions and alterations have also been made).

A word about the structure of the work. Incorrect and legendary information is frequently omitted, unless its discussion and analysis have become inevitably expedient for marshalling and tracing the link. If a fact is simply repeated at different places, only one or two references to it have been cited' and deemed adequate. Identification of names and places has been merely touched upon under inevitable circumstances or omitted, for too much literature has already accumulated on it. As a necessity, the approximate dates of all the works referred to in the thesis are given in the bibliography.

An appendix containing a list of selected technical terms is provided at the end to enhance the utility of the research product.

The ultramodern scientific dialectics of the orientation and presentation of the monograph and its absolutely original and fascinating discoveries along with the novel factuality’s easily characterise it to serve as a text book for the Acharya Classes of the Sanskrit Universities and M. A. students of geography and Indology and Ancient History and Culture of India in all Indian and foreign Universities. Research scholars would specially find it a fountain source of ample inspiration and guidance, opening up further vistas for the devolutionary spade work and spectroscopic historiography. It would prove of much attraction and utility also to other classes of lovers and readers of the saga of civilization.
