On 28 June 2007, the Red Fort was declared a World Heritage Site. Dilli's Red Fort: by the Yamuna aims to inform, stimulate and, above all, open the reader's eyes to the wonder that is the Red Fort, and to bring together words and pictures on this monument more closely than ever before. Although the edifices are described in the text, the intention here is to make the subject more illustrative and update the accounts and events associated with this marvellous Fort. We have striven to cover the entire span of its history, right from its evolution and inheritance till the present day, describing various aspects of the events associated with it, from the Mughal period to the days of independent India. The aim has been to keep the focus on the historical and architectural features of this great monument. The issues, day-to-day events and the conditions that prevailed during the reigns of the different rulers are elaborated here in order to throw light on the political, social and economic aspects such as trade, religious fervour, hobbies and sports.
The chapters have been arranged in such a way that the readers can either start at the beginning in the conventional manner or enter the book at any point, as each chapter is more or less self-contained, though it connects with the others to form a coherent whole. The broad development of events unfolds in narrative spreads which usually begin with the historical background and then cover a particular period, including the events associated with the freedom struggle of India.
Dilli's Red Fort: by the Yamuna is indeed a storehouse of information regarding architectural details, various constructional aspects, factors propelling deterioration, vandalism, decay, conservation, maintenance, preservation and the restoration work carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India.
This book is also for those interested in a detailed study of the Red Fort and curious to know about the structures that have disappeared, their original location and the steps taken to safeguard the ones that exist today.
Dilli's Red Fort: by the Yamuna provides insight into the work of those who are using their expertise to preserve the remains. The bibliography provided will help the serious reader.
In the selection of material for this book, an attempt has been made to obtain, as far as possible, contemporary sketches and drawings. In a few cases, where contemporary material was just not available or was unsuitable for reproduction, modern techniques have been used to enhance the images.
This journey into the past, into the glorious days that reflect a rich heritage and present the Red Fort as it truly was, has been an enriching experience for the team at Niyogi Books.
Standing silently on the banks of the River Yamuna in Delhi, this citadel is indeed where history was made.
