Preface
Through the publication of this book entitled "Einstein: His Papers and His Letter" authored by Prof. N.Krishnaswamy in the year of Physics 2005, the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre for Science and Human Values, has the unique opportunity of associating itself in a small way in the International Celebrations that are going on all over the world to commemorate the centenary of the publication of the three path breaking papers of the Nobel Laureate Albert Einstein. In this book the author who is a professor of physics has not only presented a lucid account of scientific contributions of Einstein, but has also given an account of the colourful and illustrious multifaceted personality of 1 Einstein. The high esteem in which the world scientific community held Einstein and the high regard that Einstein had for Mahatma Gandhi as an apostle of peace are also brought out in the book. It is our ardent hope that the book will stimulate the readers especially the young readers. As the poet H.W.Longfellow says: "Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and departing, leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time".

Foreword
The year 1905 has been hailed as Einstein's Miraculous Year. Working in the seclusion of the patent office in Berne, Switzerland, Einstein produced no less than five original papers that were destined to radically alter our view of the physical world. His work on Brownian motion established the reality of atoms and molecules; his explanation of the photoelectric effect proved to be a corner stone for the quantum theory; finally his special theory of relativity was to revolutionize the ideas regarding space and time. This was followed by the celebrated equation setting down the equivalence of mass and energy, which was to be verified in the devastating explosion of the atomic bomb over Hiroshima four decades later. Any one of these papers was enough to make Einstein one of the great scientists of all time. But he continued his phenomenal activity in research contributing to many branches of physics. Einstein's general theory of relativity, which he formulated in 1915, was the crowning glory of all his achievements. No wonder then that Einstein and Isaac Newton, who had his own Miraculous Year in 1665, are considered to be the two monumental pillars of physics.

Introduction
The year 2005 has been designated as the year of Physics, in commemoration of the four seminal papers published by Einstein a hundred years ago, in 1905. The most important contributions of Einstein are contained in eight papers he published at various times in Annalen der Physik, the German journal dedicated to Physics and elsewhere and in the famous letter he wrote to President Roosevelt in 1939, which set in motion the actions, which culminated in the production of the atom bomb and the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He did publish many other papers, and wrote many other letters, but these eight papers and this particular letter revolutionized humanity in a way and to an extent, which the others did not.The year 2005 has been designated as the year of Physics, in commemoration of the four seminal papers published by Einstein a hundred years ago, in 1905.
