Book Description
Preface
Nava Nalanda Mahavihara in 2007 conceptualised the "Mapping of Nalanda, Rajgir and Around project. The intention behind the project was to document the tangible and intangible Buddhist heritage in the vicinity of Nalanda and identify people in villages who were either already working or could be engaged in preservation of the ancient heritage. Thus started the concept of Heritage Volunteers. With the passage of time this association of NNM with the Heritage Volunteers has shown an organic growth. The participation of the Heritage Volunteers, who have been working like Heritage Warriors, paved the way for NNM to conceive long-term projects and programmes to further the revitalisation of the Buddhist heritage. NNM in 2013 published a book titled "Engaged Buddhism". The book was a documentation of milestones of the community-heritage interface and heritage revitalisation activities undertaken by NNM until then. The "Engaged Buddhism" book was meant for circulation among the Heritage Volunteers associated with NNM and therefore, it was published without an ISBN registration. "Engaged Buddhism" is now getting republished for a wider circulation under a new title, "Engaged Buddhism: Community-Heritage Interface in Action". This revised edition has incorporated major achievements of community-heritage interface activities undertaken by NNM until July 2023. The community outreach activities led by NNM and in consequence this book is an outcome of the collective effort of the NNM family, teaching and non-teaching staff and the students. This dossier is also an acknowledgement of the role played by the Heritage Volunteers in sustaining heritage conservation through thick and thin. We hope this documentation will inspire policymakers to encourage educational institutions to take up activities to foster community-heritage interface.

Introduction
There is an intimate relation between the state of Bihar and Buddhacärikä. On the basis of textual evidence for centuries, millions of followers of the teachings of the Buddha understood the synonymous relationship of Bihar and the Buddhacärikä. It was here in Bihar that the Siddhārtha started his spiritual journey; it was here that his Journey of Enlightenment took its fruition and he became the Buddha. Emperor Aśoka, in the third century BCE, inspired by the teachings of the Buddha made Dhamma (Dharma) the basis of rule and governance. Ashoka defined the main principles of Dhamma as non-violence; tolerance of all sects and opinions; obedience to parents; respect for the virtuous, religious teachers and priests; liberality towards friends; humane treatment of servants; and enerosity towards all. Gradually over the century, this land of the Buddha was nearly governed consistently by the Dhamma propagated by Aśoka, which became the basic guidelines. The land of the Buddha, after his Mahāparinirvāņa, became the Land of Vihara.
