Book Description
Preface
KASHMIRI is a language with a small vocabulary. This has been greatly augmented by words borrowed from Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic. The language spoken by Muslims differs from that of the Hindus. The latter use more words derived from the Sanskrit, and the former more from Arabic. There is also some difference in the pronunciation, the same word not being pronounced by Muslims in exactly the same way as by Hindus. Muslims form more than ninety per cent of the population of the Valley. Roman type has been used, with a uniform system of spelling based upon the method introduced by the late Sir George Grierson, the eminent linguist to whom Kashmir owes so very much for his scholarly analysis and reduction to rule of this difficult It language; and especially for his masterly and monumental Dictionary of the Kashmiri Language, and his able Manual of the Kashmiri Language. In 1872 the late Dr. Elmslie published a Vocabulary of the Kashmiri Language, which has long been out of print. I have made this the basis of my present work, with various alterations and corrections. It is of course short and limited in scope. My aim has been to provide the visitor to Kashmir, with a list of words for quick reference, many of which are additional to those embodied in my manual of lessons in the Kashmiri language published in 1934 under the title, Kashmiri Made Easy. I gratefully acknowledge the valuable advice and help in the preparation of this little vocabulary, which I have received from Pdt. Shenker Koul, late Headmaster of the Kashmir Mission School, and from Peer Salam-ud-Din, Teacher at the Hadow Memorial School.
