Book Description
Introduction
The inscriptions, engraved on stone or metal, constitute an important source material for the reconstruction of the history of our ancient past. Realising this, individual scholars as well as government institutions have been working on the collection, decipherment and publication of these records, The Government of India has got a branch with Chief Epigraphist to look after this work and publish the results of discoveries in a journal, "Epigraphia Indica" issued every quarter. This journal is of all India nature and hardly finds enough space to high-light the discoveries which have a bearing on the history of Andhra Pradesh. In order to emphasise this aspect a separate Branch has been opened in the Directorate of Archaeology, Andhra Pradesh. It has been decided that this Branch should make a village to village survey in Andhra Pradesh, collect inscriptions, stone or copper plates, and publish them. To have a journal for high-lighting the records, which have a bearing on Andhra history and culture, it was also decided to start a journal named "Epigraphia Andhrica". I am happy to present to the scholarly public this first issue which contains articles by different scholars on important inscriptions discovered recently. I am sure this will be useful to the scholars of Andhra bistory in particular and all lovers of Epigraphy in general.
