The historical scenario of Indian English novels is conventionally conceived to have come to view around the mid-nineteenth century. Shunkur: A Tale of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 by Shoshee Chunder Dutt (1824-1885) is a fictional representation of the resistance of 1857 against the British colonial power. Kandan the Patriot by K. S. Venkataramani (1891-1952) is about the impact of the Civil Disobedience Movement of the early 1930s on South India. As India marks the 75th year of independence, tributes and festivities have been vibrant and exuberant, evoking the country's own essence. The purpose of this book too is to pay tribute to our motherland.

Two novels, Shunkur: A Tale of the Indian Mutiny of 1857 written by Shoshee Chunder Dutt (1824-1885) in 1873-1874 and Kandan the Patriot written by Kaveripatnam Siddhanatha Venkataramani (1891-1952) before January 1932, which are being reprinted here on the occasion of the 75th year of the achievement of Indian independence, are indeed two fine examples of Indian novel writing in English. They have been brought within the same cover because of their common patriotic fervour.
Indian English literature is the outcome of the cross fertilisation of two enriched cultures - Indian and English. It is literature created by Indians both before and after independence. All Indian writers who wrote in English since the days of Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772-1833) down to our own time belong to Indian English literature. It spontaneously and powerfully expresses varying shades of emotions, thoughts and feelings typical to the genius and character of India. Indian English literature is 'a curious native eruption, an expression of the practical no less than creative genius of the Indian people.
