Preface

This monograph includes four of my articles, two of which were published in periodicals and the other two were presented to seminars, reports of which have not yet been brought out. “Alexander And India” was published in Greece & Rome : Alexander Commemoration Volume (Second Series, Vol. XII, No. 2, October 1965). "The Early Movements of the Sakas and the Pahlavas” was presented as a paper at the Seminar on the Movements of Ideas and Peoples on the occasion of Asian History Congress held in Delhi in 1963. "A New Version of the Minor Rock Edict I of Asoka” was published in Bhāratī, the Bulletin of College of Indology, No. 5, Pt. 1, 1961-62. “Date of Kaniska” was presented as', the basic paper for discussion at the Seminar on the Date of Kaniska held at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London in 1960. I have been advised to publish them in this form since these papers are not easily available. I have added some appendices also to make the monograph more useful. One of the appendices is conrtibuted by E. Zürcher and is being included here with his permission. The readers are requested to note the date of original publication or presentation of these articles for I have deliberately chosen here not to make these contributions up-to-date and, therefore subsequent publications have not been referred to. I have much to add to these contributions and I hope readers will find them soon elsewhere.

I take this opportunity to thank Professor Zürcher, Bhikshu J. Kashyap, Sri Maheshwari Prasad, Dr. Balram Srivastava and Sri P. K. Agrawala for their initiative and help of various nature in bringing out this monograph.
