Book Description
About the Book
What if the answers to life's greatest mysteries-our origins, identity, and purpose-could be found where science meets spirituality? Genome to Om is an extraordinary journey that connects the beginning of the universe with the profound link between the Self and the ultimate reality. This compelling book delves into the wonders of the Genome, representing modern science, and the resonance of Om, echoing in the discovery of the cosmic hum that symbolizes the spiritual essence of life. It takes readers beyond the boundaries of death and explores the delicate interplay of genes, the environment, and consciousness.

While exploring the desired transition from modern science to meta-science, Genome to Om reflects on pressing modern dilemmas-the ethical challenges of artificial intelligence and genetic engineering-unlocking the mysteries of the human mind and psyche, and transitioning from mere thinking to deeper, intuitive knowing.

The book invites us to envision the Omcene, a transformative era where science and spirituality unite to create a harmonious and balanced world. Practical, intriguing, and deeply relevant, Genome to Om challenges us to rethink what we know, explore the unseen, and rediscover our purpose in an ever-changing world. This book is more than a read-it's a companion to a future of unity, peace, and well-being.

About the Authors
Dr Bhushan Patwardhan, National Research Professor-Ayush, is an accomplished and highly cited biomedical researcher ranked among the top scientists globally with over a three-decade stint in health research cutting across trans-disciplinary fields. He is an elected fellow of the National Academies of Sciences and Medicine in India. Dr Patwardhan is a distinguished professor at the Savitribai Phule Pune University, India, and an adjunct professor at Western Sydney University, Australia. He is a member of the Lancet Citizen's Commission on reimagining India's health system and an advisor to the WHO's Global Traditional Medicine Centre. Indu Ramchandani has spent most of her working years as an editor, transcriber, compiler, and book publisher. After five years as the South Asia editor-in-chief at Encyclopaedia Britannica, she moved on to being a freelance editorial consultant. The passion for writing developed with the studies of the ancient scriptures and the epics. Indu Ramchandani has transcribed and published 14 handbooks in the Understanding Vedanta Lecture Series, written several articles on Vedic philosophy, and co-authored Life Is as Is: Teachings from the Mahabharata.

Foreword
It is with great pleasure that I write a few words about this remarkable Ivolume volume by Bhushan Patwardhan and Indu Ramchandani. Bhushan and I have been discussing such a book for almost 10 years, and in his preface, Bhushan generously acknowledges my modest contribution in reorienting and strengthening the principal theme of the book, glimpsed in its very title. We have collaborated in the past in publishing Integrative Approaches to Health (Elsevier 2015), a well-received and widely read volume. I consider the present work Bhushan's magnum opus, a testament to his deep knowledge. Genome to Om is an arrow shot in the right direction, one that will further stimulate a growing dialogue around urgent remedial actions required to confront and remedy the existential problems threatening human beings and our planet. In the intricate interphase between science and spirit (metascience as referenced by the authors), Genome to Om offers a compelling vision of humanity's potential evolution. The authors' meticulous exploration of the scientific landscape is firmly rooted in their dedication, perseverance, and expertise. Yet, as a student of both the empirical and the esoteric, I find myself wrestling with the nuances of the narrative. While I applaud this clarion call for a transition from Genome to Om-a shift from the dominance of scientific materialism to a world view embracing compassion, ethics, and equanimity-I cannot embrace the notion that this transformation will unfold as a natural progression. The forces of human ego, greed, and self-interest, along with the corruption of vital human institutions, are deeply entrenched in our society. Democracy, our one hope for equality and freedom, is in decline in many of the advanced nations.

Preface
My path to co-authoring Genome to Om was as M unexpected Las serendipitous. Unlike Professor Bhushan Patwardhan, I had not envisioned being part of such a project. My journey has been one of continuous learning, far from the traditional academic path. With a background in Economics and English and a career spanning proofreading, editing, book publishing, and writing, I found my passion in the world of books quite early, when it began as a child in my father's bookshop.

Working in a publishing house out of necessity, which helped me build a lifelong career, I navigated through an extensive range of non-fiction, including life sciences and pure sciences. My respect for content deepened during my tenure as South Asia editor-in-chief of Encyclopaedia Britannica. The study of the ancient Vedic scriptures further enriched my understanding. For that, I remain indebted to Pravrajika Vivekaprana ji, who guided me through the study of the primary Upanishads, some works of Adi Shankaracharya, and the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda. My engagement as a freelance editor for the UGC connected me with Dr Patwardhan, and we bonded instantly over our shared interest in the Upanishads.

A chance meeting again with Dr Patwardhan in early 2023 in Pune brought this book into my life. He shared the concept that had been firmly rooted in his mind since 2003, and from that point on, there was no turning back.

Prologue
Before we begin the journey of Genome to Om we must explain what we mean by "Evolving journey of modern science to meta-science". We are exploring the remarkable strides in science and technology, as a tribute to human ingenuity and its relentless pursuit of knowledge, and we are pointing to the potential misuse of these advancements, which forewarn us about a future marred by unchecked ambition and disregard for nature. At this crucial moment in history, when our actions have hastened the onset of the Anthropocene, Genome to Om advocates a transformative shift from mere scientific exploration to a meta-scientific approach. In the process, we recall many profound concepts drawn from some key sources of the ancient knowledge systems, mainly the Bhagavad Gita, the Vedas, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, and the Upanishads. Our initial focus is on the Indian Knowledge Systems because of our familiarity with them. But we recognize and acknowledge the universality of wisdom across global traditions, where, for centuries, thinkers and seers have tried to unveil nature's secrets through inner exploration. We also recognize resonating concepts from Buddhist, Chinese Taoist, Zen, Jain, and other Eastern traditions. The Vedic scriptures were originally written in Sanskrit, although several commentaries and translations are available today in English. To simplify the reading and understanding for those of us who are not comfortable with or aware of Sanskrit, we have avoided using the original terminology in the text, unless unavoidable. But the original terms are alphabetically listed in the glossary for those of us who want to know and possibly learn the original terms.
