About the Book
This book, is a faithful reproduction of original texts of Christian Marathi Vtopka (Passion of Christ), written by Catholic missionaries during the 17th century in Marathi language and Roman script. while the Portuguese were ruling Goa.

Dr. S.M. Tadkodkar, an ardent research student of Christian Marathi Literature of the 17th century, has offered in this book edited copies of three poems based on sublime pathos of the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. He also transliterated the texts into the Devanagari script.

Dr. Tadkodkar has restored original texts after following principles of textual criticism. The author has also investigated linguistic form of the 17th century in Goa to explore whether it resembles with that of 12th and 13th centuries Marathi language in Maharashtra.

The linguistic erudition reflected in these consolidated texts would emerge as a patient study of the 17th century enriched with glossary and copious notes. This attempt should be considered as. the valuable contribution to the understanding of vernacular languages, terpotentially abundant 3pecialized linguistics.

Introduction
Jam quite satisfied on the occasion of publication of the book based on the research titled GOA CHRISTIAN MARATHE VILAPIKA DURING THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY, written by my student, Dr. S.M. Tadkodkar, Reader in the Department of Marathi of Goo University, who has been busy in research and imparting Instruction. He earned his Ph.D. degree after completing research under my guidance on the critical analysis of the contribution made by Prof. A.K. Priolkar to the Marathi language and literature. I had advised him to continue his research on the old and very important manuscripts. I am happy to note here that he has been doing so.

Recently, he had received a scholarship for a three-year Major Research Project from University Grants Commission, New Delhi. I insisted that he should complete the task. Being consistent to his attitude, Dr. Tadkodkar did complete the research, which introduced to the English readers about the Marathi poetry based on the passion of the Christ that was written by the Christian missionaries during the 17th century in Goa. My teacher Prof. Priolkar and I, had initially introduced the study of the PASSION OF THE CHRIST. Dr. Tadkodkar has rightly acknowledged so in this book.

Dr. Tadkodkar has done a fresh research and made available the old and rare writing in the manuscript form for the benefit of students of languages. A genuine text of the 17th century poetry has come in the hands of serious student of languages for the first time. This attempt has helped the hand written poetry to remain in print form ever after, or otherwise would have perished in the annals of history. He has also applied the principles of textual criticism and attempted to restore the text. He has also pin-pointedly made clear about his viewpoint while devising the theory of transliteration from the Roman script into Devanagari.
