The present book God Lived with Them contains the life stories of sixteen monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna, whereas They Lived with God (published by Shepherd and Walwyn of London and the Vedanta Society of St. Louis in 1989 and Advaita Ashrama of Calcutta in 1991) contains the life stories of thirty-one prominent householder devotees. Taken together, these forty-seven biographies depict how Sri Ramakrishna's teachings manifested and came to fruition in his disciples' lives. To me, Sri Rama Krishna is like a chandelier and his disciples and devotees are like bulbs of different wattages radiating the light, or wisdom, of their Master. I feel blessed that for the last five years I have been able to travel, mentally of course, with these sixteen disciples from each one's birth to his death. I observed their unique love and faith in their guru, their purity and renunciation, their training and austerity, their struggle and longing for God, their spiritual unfoldment and unselfish service to humanity.
Among the sixteen monastic disciples, five went to college (two graduated), ten did not finish their formal education, and one was completely unlettered but all of them learned from their guru true spirituality, which no educational institution could provide. Sri Ramakrishna was an extraordinary teacher and his methods were unique. Through his subtle spiritual influence, he enflamed his disciples' hearts, thereby creating hunger and passion for God. As a result, they became so inebriated with divine bliss that they almost forgot the world.
