Grand son speaks about his Grand Father It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction, and a sense of great honour and pride in writing the forward for a book on my grandfather written by his student Satyanarayana Bhat.
Ayurveda as a science of life has always been a medical knowledge system practiced, promoted and taught in the guru Shishya tradition. There have been great sages, scholars and practitioners of Ayurveda over a period of time who have contributed in their own way in interpreting, evolving and refining this great science for the welfare of the humanity.
In this great tradition, a significant personality to have lived for the cause of Ayurveda, in this century has been my grandfather Late Dr. P.T.K. NAMBISAN. A life steeped immensely in the traditional sense of Sanathana Dharma, he was a great Sanskrit scholar and astrologer which ultimately.
contributed to his evolution as a master Ayurveda practitioner.
Of late there exists a great disparity between academic and clinical excellence in Ayurveda. Academic brilliance does not translate into clinical distinction and vice versa. Very few people have bridged this gap and maintained equipoise. My grandfather was one of them. His students one of whom is the author of this book, have become notable figures in various spheres of Ayurveda bearing testimony to his academic contribution. The diverse populaces with complex clinical histories who have benefitted with his treatment over the years vouch for his ability as a great clinician. Even to this day, I come across narrations of experiences with my grandfather from students and patients, underscoring the impact he has made on their lives.
I have always been in awe of my grandfather since childhood. His clarity of thought and the confidence he had in carrying himself in any circumstances, be it with patients, relatives or doctors stirs amazement in me even today. My grandfather always laid great stress on leaning Sanskrit which he introduced me to at a very early age. He taught me Sanskrit poetry and initiated me into Ayurveda by teaching me the initial few chapters of Ashtanga Hridaya. His passing away during my school days robbed me of an opportunity to progress my tutelage under him.
My best memories with my grandfather have been the time I spent in his consultation sessions. I have been witness to desperations, happiness and varied emotions of people who come there with great hope and to seek solace to their problems.
The impact my grandfather created as a great teacher and practioner in Karnataka and as a renowned Ayurveda Vaidya in Kerala is well-etched. Even today he is fondly remembered as Mannur Nambisan Vaidyan. I feel blessed to be writing this foreword for a work in his memory. I fervently hope that this book inspires its readers and practioners of Ayurveda to embrace the true philosophy and sancity of this wonderful science of life and appreciate the sacrifices, stead fastness and ardor that precede the making of a complete Vaidya.
