Amitabh Bachchan has performed exceptionally in the three roles - Father and the twin sons. Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) a lawyer is married to Janaki (Waheeda Rehman). He prosecutes his friend (Amjad Khan) a criminal and sends him to jail. On his return from jail, Amjad frames Amit for murder, which forces Amit to leave his pregnant wife and the town. Janaki gives birth to twins. The doctor hands one of the twins to a family who lost their child to save the mother of which Janaki is not aware. Shankar is brought up by Janaki to be a police officer. Guru grows up to be a stage artist. The story revolves around how the family comes together again. The police officer brings out the image of quiet and brooding angry young man, while the stage artist brings out the comic side of Amitabh Bachchan.
