Book Description
Acknowledgements
It is a great pleasure to acknowledge the contributions of the many people who influenced the shape of this dissertation, as well as my own scholarship. First, I would like to thank the one who has perhaps influenced the way I think about Tibetan texts, and how Tibetan history should be studied, more than any other, Leonard van der Kuijp. During my time at Harvard, he helped me tremendously, both personally and intellectually. Especially during the last few years, as we worked on this and other projects together, it was a delight to see a real scholar in action. In the end, I hope some of his talent as a philologist rubbed off. I also thank Janet Gyatso for her support, especially during my first years in the doctoral program. She has fostered my theoretical thinking on Tibet, and always tried to make me see the larger picture. It was a real honor to have worked with both of these scholar of Tibet. Without their complementary strengths, this book would never have come to fruition. I would also like to thank Parimal Patil, my first Sanskrit teacher, for his unstinting enthusiasm for this project, and the many long discussions we shared on the wide swath on Buddhist history. Larry McCrea has also been a great source of help in my exploration of Sanskrit literature. His generous guidance as we translated the Bodhgaya inscriptions set the stage for my thinking of what late Buddhism in Bodhgayä might have looked like.
