Homoeopathic physicians in India are also first contact physicians on whom the onus of maintenance of health of the people of the country falls like their counterpart allopathic physicians.
Considering the relative strength of Homoeopathy in Mother and Child Care and the advantage of Homoeopathy of being a safer alternative, Department of AYUSH, Government of India launched a National Campaign on Homoeopathy for Mother and Child Care. This National campaign is aimed at sensitizing policy makers, allopathic physicians and the general public about the strengths of Homoeopathy in Mother and Child Care.
While creating awareness about the strengths of Homoeopathy was an objective, it was also felt that homoeopathic physicians in the field should be assisted by providing relevant resource material that would be helpful for them in practice. A Handbook on Homoeopathy for Mother and Child Care has been prepared by the CCRH containing information compiled from various sources and incorporating strategies for general management and specific homoeopathic therapeutics for various conditions commonly seen during pregnancy and childbirth. I compliment CCRH for their endeavour in this direction.
The handbook has contribution from gynaecologists, pediatricians and homoeopathic experts. It is anticipated that the physicians at the Primary Health Centres and in various dispensaries would find this handbook useful. This Handbook will also be helpful in Re-orientation training programmes for the teachers of homoeopathic colleges and for clinicians attending the CME programmes.
The Homoeopathic system of medicine is one of the fastest growing comple mentary/alternative medical systems (CAM) in the world. It is a fact that no one medical system can manage all the health care needs of society and every system of medicine has its own areas of strength and weakness. Homoeopathy is a system of medicine based on the principle of 'Similia Similibus Curentur i.e. 'let likes be treated by likes'. Homoeopaths treat the patient who suffers from a particular disease but not the disease per se and takes into account a range of physical, mental and lifestyle factors in patients for the selection of medicines, besides the presenting complaints. Hence, Homoe-opathy is tailor made for individualized treatment. Homoeopathic medicines stimulate the body's own defense system and allow the body to heal itself. Such medicines are very safe, gentle and do not have toxic side effects. It is most cost effective and safe. This system which was first introduced in Germany, and came to India in the early nineteenth century, has taken root in the country and has gained mass acceptance as well as official recognition.
