As India was emerging into freedom in a world of science and technology. Prof. Raghu Vira visualized the need of Indian languages as developed media of communication. It was a challenging paradigm to evolve their vocabulary for all domains of sciences and administration to take their natural place in national life. He strove for long years to provide Indian equivalents for technical terms for the immense creative amplitude of our source language Sanskrit. Greek and Latin the source languages of European terminologies and Sanskrit have the same grammatical basis of wond formation from roots with prefixes and suffixes. There is a perfect harmony of terminological creativity between the Indian and European systems. Prof. Raghuvira became the prime maker of Indian words. He has bequeathed over 160,000 words in the conviction that "Du bist die Zukunft (Thou art the time to come) in the lines of Rainer Marie Rilke. In 1955 Prof. Raghu Vira incorporated all the glossaries of technical terms into the Comprehensive English-Hindi Dictionary of Governmental & Educational Words and Phrases (Sarasvati Vihara Series 35). He had the collaboration of several eminent scholars and scientists. It contains over 160,000 single words, compounds and oft-used phrases pertaining to the various branches of administration, such as. Accounts, Audit, Banking and Insurance, Budget and Finance, Commerce and Industries, Labour, Planning and Development, Mining. Electricity, Irrigation, Forests, Food and Agriculture, Survey, Revenue and Land Records, Local Self-Government, Police, Jails, Defence, Posts and Telegraphs, Roads, Railways and Air Transport, Public Works, Health, Education and Social Services and Law, Constitution, Parliamentary Practice, Economics, Politics, Newspapers: AND Anatomy. Astronomy. Bacteriology. Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology. Mathematics, Medicine, Meteorology. Mineralogy, Optics, Pharmacy, Physics, Physiology, Radar and Radio, Statistics Zoology, etc., etc. Prof. Raghu Vira continued the creation of terms till the very last day in 1963. I edited all his oeuvre in a supplementary volume in 2009. A reverse Hindi-English card index was being written by Prof. Raghu Vira over the years whereby the English counterpart of the Hindi term could be accessed. They have been edited in this Hindi-English Dictionary. It is the yearning of the Indian mind to penetrate directly into the unknown through the medium of its own tongue.
