Book Description
Preface
The little volumes on HUMAN VALUES IN ANCIENT INDIAN LITERATURE like the Vedas, the Upanishads, Human Values in Manusmrti, Human Values in the Code of Kautilya and also Human Values in Ancient Tamil Sangam Literature were prepared by eminent scholars in their respective fields: Dr. S.Ramaswamy and Vid. S.Raja-gopal Sharma on Human Values in the Vedas and the Upanishads'; Dr. D.V.Gundappa on 'the Code of Manu'; Shatavadhani Dr. R.Ganesh on 'Human Values in Manu-smrti' and 'the Code of Kautilya', Prof. T.K.Nagambal on 'Human Values in Ancient Tamil Sangam Literature'. Each title on Human Values of this book, was prepared for our Book-pack series, researched and published by Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values, Bengaluru in 1990s and received unprecedented acclaim from the seers and scholars as a much needed and timely publication to initiate the young into the marvels of our ancient culture, value system and wisdom. "....The theme of the Vedanta (Upanishads) is the welfare of humanity in all its aspects. Though it holds spiritual perfection as the ultimate goal of life it has given due prominence to the cultivation of social, moral and ethical values in life as necessary prerequisites. They insist that certain values of life must be cultivated and protected for the good of the individual and the society. Wisdom lies in practising these truths in all sincerity. The Taittiriya Upanishad contains all that is necessary for the welfare of mankind...." ".... The Veda and the Code of Manu derive their greatness from the supreme value to man of the subject they treat of. The Veda is for men who have accepted disciplines prescribed by Manu, and the Manu Smrti is for those who wish to realize in their lives the truths embeded in the Veda...." ".....The Indian way of life is essentially based on the four fold value-system(the purushartha chatushtaya). These four basic values are 'Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha'.Kautilya says that Artha is the entity by virtue of which the whole world is engineered Arthashastra is the science of attaining a healthy formation of men, materials and methods to evolve a profitable and happy way of life along with a sustained mode of maintaining the same comfort throughout...." The youth of the day has not grasped it properly; we see some of them dangerously pursuing perverse paths which spell out catastrophe. Realising this truth, Dr. H.K.Ranganath, the then Head of the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre had taken up the meaningful project of research and publication of these booklets which attracted all-round appreciation. The Centre was very fortunate to get an unpublished script on the "Code of Manu" written by the celebrated scholar, the late Dr. D.V.Gundappa. It was extremely kind of the Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs(GIPA) and its most highly esteemed Secretary Mr. Justice Nittoor Srinivasa Rau to have permitted us to print the precious document in our book-pack for the young series(in 1998). The Centre is most grateful to the scholars for pain-stakingly collecting the salient features of human values in these texts, beautifully and lucidly articulating them in these tiny volumes. The Centre is also grateful to Shri B.S.Gundu Rao for the painstaking work of proof-reading and to Smt. H.V.Geetha and Sri V.Ganesha for the pre-press job of this book. The Centre is also grateful to Sri Shantaram A.Bhandarkar and Sri Vasanth Shenoy of India Now Foundation, Udupi for their interest, encouragement in making this book come to light in this format. And also are we grateful to Aditya Printers for their good and timely job of printing.
