Book Description
Preface
The little volumes on Human Values in the Religions like Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrian(Parsi)ism, Christianity and Islam were prepared by the eminent scholars in their respective fields, Prof. M.A.Jayachandra, Ven. Sanghasena, Dr. B.V.Raja Ram, Mrs. P.N.Jungalwalla, Dr. Placid Rodriguez and Prof. Yejasuddin. More than two thousand five hundred years ago, marked by political uncertainty upheavals, social unrest and spiritual anarchy, the great preceptors made their presence felt in answer to the pressing needs of the times. They were Vardhamana Mahaveera, Siddhartha-Goutama Buddha, Zarathushtra, Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad who established their religions. Each title on Human Values of this book, was prepared for our Book-pack series titled "Book-pack for the Young", researched and published by Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values, Bengaluru, during the 1990's and received unprecedented acclaim from the sages and scholars as a much needed and timely publication to imitate the young into the marvels of ancient culture, value system and wisdom. Among the cultures of the world, the Indian culture is both ancient and elevating. If its culture is carefully studied and understood, everyone can lead a life of peace and contentment. That is the reason why we felt that we should help young people clearly understand the many dimensions of the cultures together(in a bunch) comparatively. As, perhaps, the youths of the day have not grasped it properly, we see some of them dangerously pursuing perverse paths which spell out catastrophe.

Foreword
Indian Culture has often been at cross-roads in its recorded history. One of such momentous periods was two thousand and five hundred years ago, marked by political uncertainly, economic upheaval, social unrest and spiritual anarchy. It was then that six great teachers made their presence felt, in answer to the pressing needs of the times. Their names and teachings have been incorporated in the Buddhist Canon: Gosāla, Ajita, Sañjaya, Kātyāyana, Kashyapa and Mahāvīra. Add to this list Gautama the Buddha, who was a contemporary of all of them, and we have seven teachers who were all eminent path-makers(tirthankaras), wandering ascetics (pari-vrājakas) and masters of discipline (śramanas). Each of them had a large following (ganāchārya) and a distinct message (vāda). Of these seven, two became celebrated during their own lives and. world-teachers in course of time: Gauthama the Buddha and Vardhamana-Mahāvīra. It is remarkable that the two, who were not only contemporaries but hailed from the same region(Magadha) and their wanderings took them to selfsame places in a limited area, did not chance to meet each other. But their disciples met, and kept the masters informed of the teachings. Neither the Buddha nor Mahővīra had any intention of founding a new religion or dispensation. In fact, each of them regarded himself as an exponent of the eternal and immutable religion (sanātana-dharma), the religion taught by the ancient sages (in the words of Buddha, 'isi-ppavedito dhammo). Their discipline also regarded them as only successors of long lines of twenty-four masters in each case: twenty-four Biddhas, the last of whom was Gautama, and twenty-tirthankaras(or jinas) the last of whom was Mahāvīra. Religious identities of Buddhism and Jainism were not known even during days of Aśoka(270-232 B.C.) whose inscriptions speak only of sects among śramanas. However, they caught the reverential regard of the entire population by their holy lives, austere teachings, and extraordinary presence. They had come only fulfill: to undo the evils that had crept into the ancient tradition, to make the life of everyone meaningful and worthwhile, and focus the attention of the people on moral and ritual values in life.
