If by chance the reader picks up any book on Palmistry (Hand Reading), he will notice that the history of this art is totally omitted either through wilful negligence or wistful ignorance. In rare eases where some authors tried to tackle that subject, they presented a vague distorted picture which made it impossible to know when or where Palmistry began or grew.
The most important reason for which the history of Palmistry has been neglected through old and modern times, is the flat and obstinate denial of the cultured public to confess that Palmistry is a true art worthy of study and examination. People usually consider the art of Hand Reading as some means of pleasantry looked for to waste time in parties and ceremonies; thus they hardly give it a serious glance; others looked at it as a sort of charlatanism professed to gain easy money from the public who one and all are very keen to know what Fate has in store for them. Other reasons for which the decadence of that art is responsible could be found in the heaps of rubbish published occasionally by pre-tentious palmists or cheirognomists.
Ignorant writers on Hand Reading rivalled each other in copying falsehoods without paying the least attention to their unauthentic sources, or having the trouble to ascertain their validity. Those writers forgot to note that Palmistry is the only art which could be studied and practised at all times and in all places with the utmost ease. Unlike other arts, no laboratories, special instruments or exorbitant costs are needed. The student of Palmistry just has to read a healthy good book and set at once to apply its contents on his own hands or the hands of his relatives and friends; nothing could be easier.
The aim of the author of this book is, therefore, threefold:-
(1) To convey to the reader the art of Palmistry in a new original and scientific method totally different from what had been written on this subject before,
(2) To clarify any vague or unpleasant idea that might still be lingering in the reader's mind about that art, and
(3) To prove, beyond doubt, in a simple reasonable way that Palmistry is a very true art based on medical and logical evidence.
The art of Palmistry as all other arts and sciences had originated in the Far East, precisely from China. Professor II. Giles mentioned in the Coxnmeinorators review of 1905 that the Chinese studied Palmistry 3,000 years before the birth of Christ.
Ancient civilization, however, knew nothing about that art until it was studied and practised by the Greeks. As a matter of fact Greece was the first nation to hand over Cheiromancy to present generations. Many groat philosophers including Anaxagoras, Hermes, Aristotle, etc., had left their views and theories on that art. Aristotle's document on Hand Reading dating back to the year 300 B.c. is considered the oldest thesis written on that subject.
