Book Description

Foreword Banda Singh was one of the most unforgettable characters in the medieval history whose role has not yet been put in the right perspective before the readers. He was neither a 'Guru' nor a sectarian pigmy as some scholars had tried to paint him to be. Rather, he assumed the leadership of the Sikhs in their fight against the tyrannical Mughal officers of the subas of Delhi and Lahore after the assassination of Guru Gobind Singh. At the behest of the Tenth Guru as Commander of the Khalsa and he lived and died for it. It is most unfortunate that the man who was founder of the first Sikh Sovereign State by defeating the Mughal army was disowned by a section of the Sikhs themselves. By reading history one finds instances where there was an all out propaganda against Banda Bahadur which I feel is one of the causes of not getting aid from the people when he was surrounded in Gurdas Nangal. The Indian nation should have been grateful to him and he should have been a shinning hero among the youth of India and every textbook should have carried his profile. I, as member of the Parliament in my speech mentioned that he was the first victor who defeated the Mughal army in the year 1710 when India had been under the Muslim rule for more than 600 years. I am sorry to record that the elected members as well as the general public are not aware about the role of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur.

Acknowledgements This translated book infact, is a humble tribute to the great Leader of the Sikh community, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur whose contribution to our rich tradition of history and heritage has been immense and unforgettable. The aim of the English translation of the book by Dr. Harbans Kaur Sagoo namely, Dilli Wich Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Naal Sambandhit Sathana Di Nishandehi is to cater to the larger readers. At the very outset, I thank Dr. Sagoo from the depth of my heart. I am indebted to her constant support and encouragement. Infact, when Dr. Sagoo was doing her fieldwork, my curiosity also prompted me to accompany her on a few visits. It was quite challenging but extremely rewarding to visit, identify and locate the places related to the life of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in Delhi. Since that time, the whole project of locating the places related to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in Delhi fascinated me and this endeavour of translating the book that is result of persuasive fieldwork has given me immense satisfaction.
