About the Author Dr. S.Balachandra Rao(b.1944) is Hon. Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values, Bengaluru. He retired as Principal and Professor of Mathematics from the National College, Bengaluru after 35 years service of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and guiding Ph.D. candidates. Currently Dr. Rao is Hon. Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies(NIAS) and former Member of the Research Council of the National Commission for History of Science, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) New Delhi. Dr. Rao has been working on research projects in Indian Astronomy under INSA., New Delhi, since 1993. "Copernicus, A Dr. Rao presented an invited paper on "C Nilakantha Somayaji and Ganesha Daivajna comparative Study" in the science section of the 13th World Sanskrit Conference held at Edinburgh, Scotland in July 2006. Among the various titles authored by Dr. Balachandra Rao, the popular books are: (1)Ancient Indian Astronomy-Planetary Positions and Eclipses-with Programs(BRPC Ltd., Delhi); (2)Indian Astronomy-An Introduction(Uni. (9) Bharatiya (12) Grahanagalu; (13) Ganithashastrada Pravarthakaru; (14) Grahaganita (Kan); (5-14 are published by Bhavan's Gandhi Centre). Astrology Believe it or not?, Tradition Science and Society etc. Recently Dr. Rao's 'Grahalaghavam' of Ganesha Daivajna and Bhaskara-II's 'Karana Kutuhalam' were published by INSA. New Delhi(authored jointly with Dr. S.K.Uma). Dr. Rao has contributed several articles to the 'Encyclopedia of Hinduism', to be published by South Carolina University, USA.

Foreword One of the main objectives of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values is the dissemination of scientific knowledge among the public. The executive committee of the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre thought it appropriate to bring out among its publication series, the book "Indian Astronomy A Primer". It is hoped that this step will result in a larger circulation of the book not only among students but also among the discerning public both in this country and abroad, and also lead to a proper appreciation of the role of our ancient Indians in the development of astronomy and mathematics. The book is specially designed for the beginners, to provide an insight into the contributions of Indians from the Vedic period to the recent times i.e. from Vedanga Jyotisa, contributions of Aryabhata, Bhaskara upto Ganesha Daivajna and Samanta Chandrasekhara Simha (19th Cent.). The Centre is most grateful to Dr. S.Balachandra Rao for his researched and painstaking work. We hope that the book "Indian Astronomy - A Primer" will be received well. The Centre is grateful to Sri C.Gangadhar and Sri V.Ganesha for the pre-press job of this book and also to the Sreeranga Printers for their good and timely job of printing.

Preface It is with great pleasure and reverence that we dedicate this publication to the sacred memory of Kulapati Dr. K.M.Munshiji, the Founder of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on this very auspicious occasion of the Platinum Jubilee of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the 125th Birth Anniversary of Kulapati Dr. K.M.Munshiji. We are glad to bring out a reprint of this popular book on Indian Astronomy which is designed mainly for students and the interested readers to create an awareness about Indian Astronomy among them. For those who are inspired to acquire proficiency in the concepts, techniques and computational procedures developed by the great Indian mathematicians and astronomers, the books recommended are listed at the end of the book. The remarkable contributions of India to the fields of mathematics and astronomy are well acknowledged and documented. It is heartening that the reputed Madura College (Autonomous), Madurai, took the thoughtful decision of introducing Indian Astronomy as part of the mathematics curriculum for the undergraduate classes.
