Book Description
About the Book
The simplicity of the language and structure of the book makes it easy to use. Considering that there are a limited number of texts that offer such comprehensive commentary on these laws, I expect that this book would serve as a valuable reference to the general public as well as legal practitioners. The Author writes with simplicity and attempts to provide a holistic coverage of every nuance of the Indian Citizenship and immigration law. This book contains a comprehensive database of case law which will be useful for every legal practitioner working in this area of law. This book should serve as a useful research tool for lawyers and academics practicing in this niche area of law.

About the Author
Amish Tandon is a corporate commercial lawyer practising in New Delhi for almost 13 years with extensive experience in areas of dispute resolution and corporate advisory. He is the co-founder of a law firm 'Innovatus Law' which specialises in litigation, alternate dispute resolution and general corporate practice. He is also the author of the best selling book titled Law of Sexual Harassment at Workplace: Practice and Procedure.

Foreword
India is home to diverse cultures, beliefs and communities. The Indian subcontinent has always witnessed migration (both legal and illegal migration). The concept of citizenship is somewhat intertwined with concept of migration in as much, in incoming migrant often seeks to make the host country his permanent home. In his latest authorship, Mr.Amish Tandon takes us through the development of Indian law in the field of citizenship and immigration, right from the inception till date. While the first half of the book covers almost every area, aspect and feature of the Indian citizenship and immigration law regime including the Citizenship law, Foreigners Law, Passports Law and Emigration Law; the second half deals with all contemporary issues on the subject, including the Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019, the National Register of Citizens, migration in Assam et al. Separately, for a lay reader, this book provides a detailed insight into all recent and contemporary issues pertaining to citizenship law. This is book is perhaps the first of its kind and will serve as a comprehensive guide for every person who wishes to gain a greater understanding of this evergreen area of law. I congratulate Mr.Tandon for this excellent work and wish him all successes going forward.
Preface
Like any other modern state, India has two kinds of people: Citizens and aliens/foreigners (non-citizens). An In citizen is one who is a legally recognised subject or national of India and owes his allegiance to India. He enjoys civil, economic and political rights in India. Every person who is not an Indian citizen is a foreigner. While foreigners may enjoy some civil rights (such as right to life, equality etc.) and some economic rights (such as right to work, wages etc.), they do not enjoy any political rights (such as right to vote, contest elections etc.). A person need not remain a citizen of 1 (one) country all his life. Subject to applicable law, he may migrate to, settle down in, and obtain citizenship of another country. Migration, in simple terms, refers to a situation where a citizen of one country moves to another country, whether temporarily or permanently; or whether legally or illegally. Migration is broadly of various types: (1) Economic migration: movement for business or employment; (ii) Social migration: movement for better quality of life or to be with persons of similar community; and (iii) Political migration: to escape persecution and war. Over the last several decades, India has experienced migration from various neighbouring countries including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Afghanistan.
