The present volume contains the proceedings of the 41st (Bombay) Session of the Indian History Congress held on 26 to 28 December 1980.
The number of papers presented at our Sessions increase every year, and so, unfortunately, do publication costs. To keep the volume within a manageable size, it was necessary to impose with a fair degree of rigidity the ceiling on the size of individual papers agreed upon at the Calicut Session (1976). I am very grateful to the contributors who readily agreed to my request and reduced their papers to keep within the prescribed limit. Unfortunately it was not possible to include, for reasons of space, the valuable papers presented at the seminar on Peasant Unrest by Dr. Majid Siddiqi, Dr. Gyanendra Pandey and Shri Gautam Bhadra. The same constraint prevented the inclusion of a number of important papers, from Aligarh, and other universities.
I am grateful to the Indian Council of Historical Research for making the publication of this volume possible through their grant of Rs. 25,000.
I would like to express my deep gratitude to Shri P.S. Dwivedi of St. Stephen's College, Delhi for editorial assistance, as well as for having ably shouldered the tedious responsibility of going through the proofs. Publication of the volume would have been impossible without the hard work put in by our Treasurer, Dr. K.M. Shrimali, Dr. G.D. Gulati, Office Secretary, and other members of the office staff The New Asian Publishers Delhi, have placed me much in their debt by completing the work of printing the volume within a very tight time-schedule.
