The present volume contains the proceedings of the Calicut Session of the Indian History Congress held on 29, 30 and 31 December 1976. Its publication was delayed on account of financial difficulties. We are grateful to the Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi, for partially financing the publication of the volume, though they are in no way responsible for the facts stated, opinions expressed and conclusions reached in the articles.
We are thankful to the sectional presidents for making selection of the papers for publication. The volume has been edited by Dr Harbans Mukhia, Dr K.N. Panikkar, Professor Sumit Sarkar, Dr Dilip K.
