Book Description

Preface The Bhanjas of Khiñjalimandala are known mainly from the copper plate's records. From the available copper plate charter we come to know that the Khinjalimandala comprising the region the whole of Baud, Sonepur, Phulabani and part of Nayagarh district. They ruled as a semi independent status under the Bhaumakaras. The history of Odisha in the 8th century A.D. entered into a new phase under the able leadership of Bhaumas. They emerged as a strong political force from Viraja or modern Jajpur. The ruler established a vast kingdom known as Toşala or Toşali. The epigraphic records states that their kingdom was extended from Danņdabhuktimandala (Midnapore in West Bengal) in the north to Ganjam district in the south and from the sea coast in the east to Baud Kandhamal. The whole of central belt under their sway. During the rule of the mighty Bhaumakaras there flourished good numbers of Mandala states were Kodālakamandala. Yamagarttamandala, Airāvattamandala. Khiñjalimandala etc. which were occupied respectively by the Sulkis, Tungas, Nandodbhavas and Bhañjas.
