Book Description
Foreword
History can be reconstructed by the use of various source materials. Among the different sources, inscriptions can be taken as more reliable and authentic. In Odisha, there was the rise of a number of sub regional kingdoms mainly from the 5th century A.D.. The rulers of these kingdoms issued a large number of land grants. These grants throw a flood of light on the contemporary political, social, economic and religious condition. The find spots of the grants mention of different era, location of the donated land, genealogy, picture of the royal seal and emblems provide ample information for the study of the past. The Gangas of Śvetaka mainly ruled over the Chikiti area of Ganjam district. The area was small. But the rulers issued as many as eighteen copper plate grants, scholars like R.Subba Rao, S.N. Rajaguru, B.C. Chhabra, S.N. Chakravarti, P.N. Bhattacharya, C.C. Dasgupta and T.C. Rath have already examined some of the grant of the Gangas of Śvetaka. But there was a need for the complete study of the charters along with the interpretations.

Preface
The Gangas of Svetaka held their sway over the Chikiti area of the Ganjam district. The Gangas of Śvetaka dynasty was one of the collateral branches of the Eastern Gangas of Kalinganagara. The history of the Gangas of Śvetaka is known mainly from the copper plate charters. From the available copper plates we presumed that they ruled mainly in the Chikiti area of Ganjam district and some portion of Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh between 8th to 10th centuries A.D. The copper plate grants issued by the rulers of the dynasty and other contemporary dynasties formed the principal source of information for the re construction of the history of Gangas of Śvetaka. So far eighteen numbers of copper plate charters have been discovered. These records are the valuable sources so far as the political, economic and socio-religious history of the dynasty is concerned. The internal as well as external evidences furnished by the copper plates are the major source materials to be utilized in writings this book. A good number of stray articles have been published in different research journals and books, but these are not sufficient for a comprehensive study of this royal dynasty. This is an attempt has been made for providing an exhaustive account of the political and cultural history of the said dynasty.
