Book Description
Foreword
Ten centuries ago, it was a period of anarchy, destruction, plunder and despoiling throughout northern India and Rajasthan. Wave after wave of Muslim invaders swept over this unfortunate plain of Hindustan. Petty Mina, Chauhan, and Badgujar chieftains were rulers of Dundhar, who plotted against, betrayed and assassinated one another. The Kachawahas after leaving Gwalior took advantage of time and opportunity and Duleha Rao, with the help of his father in law, Ralanst the Chouhan Prince, took possession of Dauss. From there he and his son, Kankil Deo advanced further and wrenched Manch, Khoh and Amber from the Minas, and put these regions under his own control. This was the beginning of how the Kachawahas laid the foundation of their future dominion in Rajasthan. Wherever possible and wherever they considered it to be strategically impor tant such as on the summit of a lofty peak, or the eliff over-hanging a torrent, or at the head of some defite among the hills, they built watch towers for observation and fortresses for safety and protection. At Dausa, Manch, Khoh and Amber they constructed such fortifications, Later on in Amber, they built a grand palace, over-looking and protected by the awe-inspiring fort of Jaigarh. Jaipur was founded by Sawai Jai Singh II, during the period, when the once mighty Mogul Empire became cumbrous, corrupt, degenerated, and was disintegrating rapidly. As the control at the centre weakened, the Wazirs, Amirs, Nawabs, Marhattas, Jats and the Pindaries began setting up independent kingdoms of their own, though still acknowledging in name the suzerainty of the weak Emperors of Delhi. Sawai Jai Singh II, an astute statesman and a shrewd judge of human nature correctly assessed the metamorphosis in Delhi and lost no time in extending, by one means or the other the former boundaries of the limited domain of Amber. At the same time, he also founded the beautiful city of Jaipur, universally recognised as a superbly planned city. It has ever since grown richer and richer and bigger and bigger as the capital of the newly named State of Jaipur, after the name of the founder of this city and the State.
