It is a great occasion of pleasure that Karnataka Samskrit University, Bangalore through its prestigious Academy of Samskrit Research, Melukote is publishing Jayakhya Samhita with English translation. This text contains two volumes and the translation has been rendered by Dr. Prabhakara P. Apte an eminent scholar in the field of Agama who has a vast experience in the field of Agama and served different institutions for bringing out many Pancharatra and Vaikhanasa Samhita texts.
His expertise in the research of Agamas is exemplary and his dedication and sincerity in completing the task is unbelievable. The Pancharatra Agama which is being followed in daily rituals of Vishnu temples in South India is an ocean of knowledge. The literal meaning of the word Pancharatra is that which is connected with five nights. There are several darshans as to know how the name Pancharatra originated, 1. Lord Narayana is said to have taught this esoteric science to Ananta, Garuda, Vishvaksena, Brahma and Rudra over five nights. 2. The five sages, shandilya etc taught this shastra hence it is called Pancharatra. 3. Lord Narayana is taught in this shastra as having five forms therefore it is called Pancharatra.
There are many other descriptions on the word Pancharatra. Bhagavad Ramanujacharya organized and established the ordinance of the Pancharatra in South Indian Vaishnava temples. The Pancharatra Agama itself proclaimed that the whole of Pancharatra is taught by none other than Sriman Narayana Himself. Bhagavad Ramanuja established the validity of Pancharatra in his Sribhashya with logical arguments. The Pancharatra Agama holds Vasudeva as Paratattva and dealing with philosophy while explaining the methodology of rituals in the temples.
The Pancharatra Agama has mainly three samhitas namely, a. Satvata b. Paushkara, Jayakhya. The temple of Lord Varadaraja in Kanchcepuram follows jayakhya samhita. There are many other samhitas like kapinjala, vishwamitra etc are available. Jayakhya Samhita has thirty three chapters and deals with the topics like creation, yoga, mantropasana, ritualistic worship, homa, initiation and code of conduct etc. 1 am very happy to express my gratitude to the Director, Registrar Admin, Research Assistants vidwan S. Krishnan, vidwan R. Narayan lyengar for bringing out these two volumes. I hope with the blessings of Lord Tirunarayana this work will be beneficial to all stake holders.
India's diversified culture is more visibly emphatic than elsewhere in the world. Different religions, different cults and sub cults, different gods, different traits the list seems a bit longer but actual. But few cults, followings, traditions have a long history and great legacy.
'Srivaishnavism' is one such faith believing in the Supreme Godhead Vishnu. The faith is quite prominent across India; the list of Vishnu temples situated in different regions of this vast nation is but a testimony to it. The Pancharatra and Vaikhanasa system are duly followed as worship manuals in the temples of Vishnu. The academy is happy to bring out the English translation of one such text namely 'Jayakhyasamhita' belonging to Pancharatra.
I would like to profusely thank Dr. P.P. Apte and Smt. Sanjivani Apte not only for their erudite contribution but also for their wholehearted dedication to the accomplishment of this monumental work. Dr.P.P Apte's continued vocation in the field of research and publication even in his advancing years is something inspirational to the present and future generation of scholars. Vid. S.Kumara as the Registrar has been an able hand in furthering the cause of academy's primary focus all these years. I reserve my thankful regards to him. The research team comprising Vid.S.Krishnan Asst. Registrar (Research) (I/C), and others has done an appreciable job in bringing forth this edition.
