पुरोवचन ऐतरेय ब्राह्मणान्तर्गत 'हरिश्चन्द्रोपाख्यान' को विद्यार्थी जीवन में, और बाद में भी, जब-जब पढ़ा, कुछ शंकाएँ निरन्तर उभरती गईं। 'चरैवेति, चरैवेति' के रूप में श्रम के गौरव की गाथाओं ने जहाँ हृदय में गहराई से स्थान बनाया, 'कलिः शयानो भवति' के रूप में कलियुग, द्वापर, त्रेता और सत्ययुग की अभिनव परिभाषाओं ने ब्राह्मण-ग्रन्थों के युग के चिन्तकों के. प्रति अपार श्रद्धा उत्पन्न की, वहीं राज्याभिषेक के प्रसंग में, नरबलि के प्रसंग ने बहुत कुछ सोचने की सामग्री भी प्रदान की। सम्पूर्ण उपाख्यान में अनेक विसंगतियाँ दिखाई पड़ीं। एक ओर पुत्र के महत्त्व ख्यापक श्लोक इसमें हैं, दूसरी ओर एक पिता पुत्र की जान लेने पर उतारू दीखता है केवल कुछ स्वर्णमुद्राओं के लोभ में। शुनःशेप और उसके भाइयों के नाम भी विचित्र प्रतीत होते हैं... शुनःपुच्छ, शुनःलाङ्गुल। यज्ञ में बलि-पशु के विशसन की व्यवस्था भी प्राणवियोजनपूर्वक नहीं है, जैसाकि पशुयागों में सर्वत्र उपलब्ध होती है-सास रोककर। इसके विपरीत यहाँ शस्त्रप्रयोग की स्थिति दिखलाई देती है। पिता अजीगर्त हाथ में तलवार उठाते हुए दिखाई देता है। लेकिन बलि वास्तव में होती नहीं है। विश्वामित्र, वसिष्ठ, जमदग्नि इत्यादि ऋत्विकों में से कोई भी स्वयं पशु का विशसन नहीं करना चाहता।
