Book Description
Preface

The dissertation entitled Kingdom of the Punjab, 1839-45, was approved by the Panjab University, Chandigarh, as thesis for the Ph.D. Degree in History in 1960. It covers the political history of the Punjab from the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh on June 27, 1839, up to the time when, following the death of Sardar Jowaher Singh on September 21,1845, the Khalsa army became ungovernable. This apparently brief period of six and a half years is indeed very stirring and crowded with sensational episodes which followed one another in rapid succession, culminating in the fatal clash with the English and resulting in the dissolution of the Kingdom of Lahore.

I have Conflicting views expressed by writers, both contemporary and modern, regarding the various events under review, have created a sort of confusion in the minds of the scholars. To obviate any further confusion in the matter, expression of personal views has been avoided in the present thesis, and bare facts, as gleaned from dependable and irrefutable sources, have been presented in their unalloyed form and allowed to speak for themselves and tell their own story. also purposely refrained from getting a foreword written by any eminent personality so as to allow the facts to stand on their own, without having to be buttressed by the renown of others, It is earnestly hoped that the work will help students of Punjab history to gain a deeper and critical insight into the currents and cross currents of events during this most crucial period as also the objects and motives of the chief actors on the then political stage. The author has, all along, endeavoured to put the sudden and successive political developments in the Punjab in their proper historical perspective.
