Book Description
About the Book
Braj is the land of Krishna's birth and childhood. Although towns and cities have replaced the verdant forests, hills, hamlets, streams and ponds of Braj, even today the cities of Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul and Barsana resonate with the beauty and romance of a bygone age. An age when Krishna, his playmates and his consort Radha gave Braj its unique place in the historical and cultural consciousness of the country. Legends and Lore of Krishna's Braj transports the reader to the streets and alleys of Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana. Peppered with lively anecdotes and personal experiences, the book captures the sights, sounds, fragrance and flavours of the colourful Lathmar Holi of Barsana, the flower-scented temple of Banke Bihari of Vrindavan, the myriad shops filled with shimmering multicoloured clothes for the brass idols of Krishna, and the delectable chaat shops that line the temple streets. The author offers tantalising glimpses into the faith of the countless pilgrims and devotees that has kept alive tales that seem to challenge reason and logic. The book also highlights the enormous cultural influence that Krishna's Braj wields: dobas and poems in Hindi, English, Urdu, Bhojpuri and Brajbhasha, classical and folk music, literature, dance, paintings, and the vibrant festivals all celebrate the motif of Krishna in the minds and hearts of the people of India.

Prologue
I was a sight like nothing I'd ever seen. Portly middle-aged men, young girls and plump women, in their thirties, forties, fifties and older, were all rolling in the sand in the courtyard with complete and enthusiastic abandon. My guide Mohan Shyam, a local resident of Vrindavan, suggested I do likewise. All my westernised, urban, middle-class inhibitions rose in revolt. 1 smiled awkwardly as Mohan Shyam looked askance at me. But this is Raman-Reti, he said, everybody feels privileged to be here and to feel this sand envelope their body. People come from far and near - to perform this sacred ritual. Still, I looked unconvinced. After a moment, to see if his words had had any effect and then concluding otherwise, Mohan Shyam reluctantly led me towards the entrance. Here a pundit sat under a tree and as I prepared to leave, he offered me a few grains of sand. 'Eat these', he said; 'ye prasad hai, kha lijiye' (this is prasad, eat it). Mohan Shyam smiled persuasively as he took the grains of sand and reverentially placed them in his mouth. "This is hallowed land, this is the very spot where Krishna Lalla played as a child, yahan kan-kan mein Krishna ki mahima hai! (Here every grain of sand is imbued with the divinity of Krishna!) This is no ordinary land, this is the sacred playground of Krishna-this is Braj!'

Introduction
There have been reams written about Krishna, tomes of serious, T greatly researched in-depth studies of his philosophy, his life and the multi-layered metaphysical meaning of his romance with Radha. Theologists, spiritual leaders, preachers and bhakts (devotees) have interpreted every facet of his fascinating persona; he is arguably one of Hinduism's most beloved gods. And yet between the extremes of the intellectual analyses of scholars and the picture-book presentations of Krishna for children, there is possibly a paucity of material for the ordinary Indian interested in knowing the legend and lore around the childhood of Krishna, before he moved to Dwarka and became Dwarkadheesh, the ruler of Dwarka, charioteer of Arjun and Lord Krishna, who gave us the Bhagwad Gita. His devotees span the globe and his discourse with Arjun on the battlefield forms the Gita, believed to be the ultimate guide to life and living. It is the book that the Indian Constitution honours by using it in our courts and for all important and solemn occasions, e.g., the swearing in of ministers of the Central Government.
