Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College, Dev Nagar, New Delhi (DU) organized a National Seminar on 25th, 26th February 2011 on the Topic 'Life, Times and Achievements of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. The seminar was inaugurated by Eminent Historian Dr. J.S. Grewal. He concluded his address by emphasising that "Thus the general impression that we get of Banda Singh is that a brave warrior, a just ruler who had a profound concern for the down-trodden and the under privileged, and a true Sikh committed to his faith to the point of death. These values and attitudes spring essentially from the ideology of the Sikh movement. The ideal of 'Raj Karega Khalsa' survived the martyrdom of Banda Singh. His meeting with Guru Gobind Singh had transformed a renunciate into a socially committed individual, and a celibate into a house-holder to pursue the ideal. His success foreshadowed the Khalsa Raj established more firmly in the late eighteenth century.
It is indeed a great honour and privilege for me to have an opportunity to saya few words about Banda Singh Bahadur, in front of such a learned and august gathering of Historians.
This two days National Seminar on 'Life, Times and Achievements of Banda Singh Bahadur' is being organised by S.G.N.D. Khalsa College, which is jointly sponsored by U.G.C and Punjabi Academy Delhi.
No doubt Baba Banda Singh Bahadur met with a tragic end, and for a few years after his death the sikhs were hunted out, yet he occupies a very high place in the history of the Punjab. Banda Singh aimed at National awakening and liberation of the country from the oppressive government of the Mughals. Though independence came to Punjab much later, yet it was Banda Singh who first taught the Punjabis to fight, conquer and establish their independent rule in the Punjab after centuries of subjection. And it was the result of this that the Hindus and the sikhs together drove out the Afghans and the Mughals out of their homeland and thus achieved freedom which they had come to regard as their birth right.
