This book offers a glimpse of a great spiritual Master's life and work. It is the saga of Divinity living in the midst of common folk as one of them, and sharing their lives. Shri Hans Ji Maharaj preached his sacred message in the language of the people, explaining esoteric spiritual mysteries in a simple and direct fashion, helping them to understand in a way that theologians and learned scholars never could. Due to his grace alone, even his simplest and humblest disciple could plumb the depths of spiritual wisdom and perceive clearly that Truth which yogis, hermits and monks struggle all their lives just to glimpse. Shri Maharaj Ji was like a lighthouse to the souls drowning in the ocean of mortality, pointing the way to the shore and safety.
It is impossible to describe fully or properly the divine play of such an enlightened Master, still, by his grace, this book was published, originally in Hindi, on 8th November, 1984, to commemorate his birth anniversary. It is the outcome of months of research, of culling extracts from the discourses printed in Hansadesh over the years, and interviewing scores of devotees to piece together as complete and accurate a picture as possible of Shri Maharaj Ji's life, personality, and impact.
There was no limit to Maharaj Ji's greatness, but even more boundless was his mercy. Yet he himself sought out the sincere aspirants on whom he could lavish his love and mercy. How and when the divine experience, knowing which nothing remains to be known, was bestowed, even the recipients sometimes couldn't say. They simply lost themselves in the Master's love. Satgurudev Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj, spiritual heir and successor to Shri Hans Ji Maharaj, together with our revered Holy Mother, Shri Mata Rajeswari Devi Ji, provided the inspiration for this book. Its conception, development and publication was possible by their encouragement and grace.
Mr. C. L. Tandon and Mr. C. B. Lal, who worked tirelessly day and night colling material and arranging it in the present format, have been close disciples of Shri Maharaj Ji from their youth. It is their personal experience in the right direction, showing them how to harmonize the spiritual and material aspects of their lives as they progressed towards the ultimate destination. With this book they have attempted to express their gratitude to their Master. How successful they have been in their tribute is for the readers to decide. They, their assistants and the devotees involved in the printing of this book deserve our gratitude and congratulations. We wish to particularly express our thanks to Mr. Om Prakash, proprietor of Om Prakash Picture Palace, New Delhi, and a longtime devotee of Shri Maharaj Ji, for the rare photographs which enhance this book.
For several years, devotees have been requesting a book on Shri Hans Ji Maharaj Ji, so Manav Utthan Sewa Samiti considers itself most fortunate in being able to discharge its obligation to its members by publishing this biography. It is not possible to depict the entire panorama of Shri Maharaj Ji, the spiritual legend and luminary of the twentieth century but even so, indelible and inspiring impressions will surely be left in readers' minds.
So, taking inspiration from his teachings, we join with Shri Satpal Ji Maharaj in keeping the river of Knowledge flowing, whose source Shri Hans Ji Maharaj was. This will be the most fitting tribute which we could offer him.
