When the Handbook of West Bengal was completed and released, the details of East Bengal, now Bangladesh, could not be covered fully. There was a time-frame for the publication of the two volumes of the handbook, and the omissions, it was felt, could be rec tified in a separate volume on Bangladesh.
With this idea in view, Dr. Sanghamitra Saha, Senior Research Fellow, was advised to visit Bangladesh for two to three weeks to make an academic survey, contact scholars and, if possible, present the three volumes of the Dravidian Encyclopaedia to Madam Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Dr. Saha agreed to undertake this survey trip because her family and that of her husband was migrated from Bangladesh.
Dr. Saha is a good collector of facts. Her reporting on her father's and mother's relatives and those of her husband was touching.
A peep into the academic and economic development of Bangladesh is also available in the report which is mainly aimed at the linguistic audience.
Prof. M.E. Manickavasagom had a tough time in editing the report. So also, Mr. Harikumar Basi and his assistant, Ms. V. Sreeveena, spared no efforts to process the matter in the computer.
Hon. Sri. Nimai Mal, the Minister of State for Library Services, in the Department of Mass Education Extension, Government of West Ben-gal, who visited the International School of Dravidian Linguistics (ISDL), released the computer print-out on 6-1-2000 and blessed the efforts of the School to cover all the nations where the Bengalis are living. We thank Hon. Jyoti Basu, the then Chief Minister, Hon. Dr. Satyasadhan Chakrabartti, the Minister for Higher Education, and Sri. Sunil Bhattacharya, the Joint Secretary in the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, for their continued support to the Bengali Chair named after Dr. Sunitikumar Chatterjee who was a tower of strength to the Dravidian Linguistics Association which is the parent-body of the ISDL at Thiruvananthapuram.
