‘Live In Concert’ A performance, be it live or a studio recording is an experience every artiste cherishes. In a studio recording, the artiste’s limitless caliber might tend to get constricted by space and time constraints. However, a live concert works on slightly different parameters. The acoustics and ambience of the performance venue are critical factors and help set the artiste’s mood initially. But the quality of the audience is what matters most. An appreciative audience can enhance the performance level. After all, when someone chooses a career as a performing artiste, the most motivating factor is appreciation. And when that is forthcoming, all else including economics, takes a back seat. The chemistry between the main artistes and their accompanists also gets a boost in the presence of a live audience. Besides, even the accompanists are encouraged to show off their musical prowess and draw personal appreciation.
When a simple ‘Wah’ converts to an ‘Aha an artiste’s ‘Sadhana’ towards the pursuit of the art form is justified. This further inspires the artistes to surpass their own levels. Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma If there is an instrument in the Indian classical music world that owes its very existence to a legend it is the Santoor. The author of this amazing story of the Santoor a folk instrument’s journey from the valleys of Jammu and Kashmir to the classical concert stage is the legendary Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma.
Born in 1938 Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma is an artiste excellence. A stalwart of pure classical music Panditji has given a glimpse of his musical prowess even to the layman by composing music for Hindi Films.
The late Pt. Uma Dutt Sharma father of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma who himself was a renowned classical musician of the Benaras Gharana was a visionary who recognized the potential of this instrumental and initiated Shivji into developing the Santoor. Over the years the instrument has been suitably modified to create a niche for itself on the classical music platform. Thanks to Shivji’s stupendous efforts the Santoor is now capable of rendering every aspect of classical music be it the Alaap, Jod Jhala, Taan or even complex Laya patterens. The slide technique adopted by Shivji for producing a meend like effect in the Alaap part of his presentation generates a mesmerizing effect rare otherwise in a striking instrument Panditji’s music is meditative and has a calming effect on the listener.
Keen on perpetuating the tradition Shivji has been imparting knowledge to younger musicians. His son Rahul is a promising young musician having established himself as a discerning artiste of the present generation.
Besides the Sanget Natak Academy and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar the Prestigious Padma Vibhushan too has been conferred upon Panditji.
