For over 50 years, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi traveled the globe with a simple yet profound message: within each of us lies an infinite ocean of creativity, intelligence, and bliss. He emphasized that this vast reservoir of human potential is accessible to anyone through the practice of his effortless and natural meditation technique-Transcendental Meditation -which allows the mind to settle deeply within and connect with this boundless field of intelligence.
However, Maharishi's vision extended far beyond individual fulfillment. He dedicated many years to developing programs that address every area of society, including education, health care, agriculture, and governance. His ultimate goal was nothing less than world peace, unrestricted progress, and the realization of the full potential of every individual in every nation.
This book offers a simple, easy-to-read exploration of Maharishi's teachings and their transformative impact on individuals and societies around the world.
For over fifty years, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi travelled the world, quietly establishing the foundation for the transformation of every area of individual and collective life. During this time, Maharishi created and implemented programs for almost every area of society, including curricula for schools and universities, health care for both prevention and cure, courses for executives and civil servants, and even organic agricultural initiatives designed to alleviate poverty in under-developed parts of the world. At the core of each was Maha-rishi's greatest gift-a program for unfolding the infinite peace and happiness, the limitless creativity and intelligence, hidden deep within us all. These were remarkable under-takings that addressed the world's most pressing needs, and Maharishi ceaselessly pursued them every hour of every day.
But with his work complete at least in the sense that he had finalized a framework to disseminate and perpetuate his teaching-it is time to tell Maharishi's story to those who may not be familiar with him or with his programs. Gener-ally such tasks fall to biographers, who portray their subjects by chronicling their lives and examining the influences that shaped their thinking. Maharishi's story, however, presents a unique challenge, for what he was and how he thought had far less to do with the details and events of his outer life than with his inner experience.
Certainly there were friends in his early years, along with family, university professors, and acquaintances; and the last fifty years of Maharishi's life included a succession of notable events and interactions with many of the great minds of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, whose advice he often took in organizational and administrative matters. The essence of his life, however, won't be found in these encounters, which did not produce a significant influence on his thought and teaching. Rather, it was the silence that he uncovered deep within that was "Maharishi," and it was this silence that he spoke of for so many years as he brought to light a science and technology dedicated to its experience and understanding.
The most powerful way to understand Maharishi is to experience that entity about which he spoke the pure intelligence deep within, the basis of individual life and the source of all creative processes in nature. After all, you can listen endlessly to the description of a strawberry's flavor, but you will never appreciate it properly without tasting it your-self. But Maharishi's teaching also tells his story, because its subject matter is his inner experience, and thus provides a glimpse of him that no biographical data can match; under-standing it will give anyone a profound insight into what he thought and how he navigated through the creation and administration of an international organization dedicated to uplifting humankind.
