Foreword

Harish Malik and I were together in the 1952-1954 class Lof MA English Literature at Delhi University. He was a brilliant student and had stood third in the University in the graduation exam. His brilliance manifested itself soon enough through the force of his personality and he got a job in Air India. He was very hardworking and his sincere work saw him reach the No. 2 position as Director, Commercial by 1985 or so. He was posted in several countries as Regional Director, and blazed a new trail wherever he went. He developed an interest in meditation around 1993 and soon his involvement in this field grew immensely. He would meditate frequently at times for hours. We all know the importance of meditation in restoring equanimity and mental balance. Harish Malik died in 2003 in an unfortunate accident. He had written a treatise on meditation. Rani, his wife, and Priya, his daughter, handed over the manuscript to me. I was amazed at the insights presented and thought it should be published for posterity. The treatise presents a fresh viewpoint of the subject. I do hope the experts will enjoy it.

About The Book

The author reached a level in meditation that rare people do. He says: I believe that the human physical system has two main compartments-the outer or the upper, and the inner or the deeper. Most spiritual philosophers describe, what I call the 'deeper' as 'subtle' or 'astral body and diagrammatically depict it as being above the outer body. As I experienced, the second physical system exists inside the body itself; I call it the inner or the deeper physical. The two compartments are closely interlinked, with constant interaction, without a clear-cut line of demarcation and have a considerable overlap in functions and responses. I subdivide each of the two compartments further into two parts the upper into physical and physical-spiritual, and the deeper into spiritual-physical and spiritual. The difference between the physical-spiritual and the spiritual-physical is that the former is more physically active and less active spiritually and the latter is the other way around. I describe these four as Physical, Bio-Spiritual, Spiritual-Physical and Spiritual. My experience so far is limited to the Bio-Spiritual and it appears to me that the next stage would have greater spiritual content till the eventual stage when nothing will exist except the self.
